Located just off the town of the same name, this lake is one of the nation's largest and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. It is also one of the bodies of water it produces more fish for human consumption. The great tradition of fishing in this lake allows hundreds of local fishermen provide for themselves, giving the city a delicious cuisine based on fresh water species.
Inside the lagoon there are several islands, one of which is inhabited by monkeys and spider monkeys as part of a research project at the University of Veracruz. Given the large number of fish that exist in the lake, many primates have learned to swim and fish for food. It is common for tourists to cross the lake to see the monkeys walk and act graciously, for which they offer boats for rent ..
